How can Digital Writing Help Students in Schools?

 Technology has taken the world by storm. With Box Lights and Chromebooks, the education system has changed drastically throughout the years. These changes have been able to provide wonders to all ages of students in the education system. These changes for some are seen as bad, however, the possibilities are endless when providing students with Chromebooks throughout their education career. 

No good thing comes without consequences. Chromebooks can become a distraction to the users and those around them. Students are also able to get on whatever website they are allowed to on the wifi provided. This can cause problems with students going on game websites and then doing the assignments they are supposed to be doing. Secondly, technology can be very unreliable. With the internet going down, or Chromebooks not charging properly, teachers are not able to use Chromebooks as often as they can. These are just a few issues to keep in mind when using technology in the classroom. However, the benefits of adding technology into the classrooms are much more significant. 

By providing technology to students, they are better able to understand the material that is being taught to them. You are introducing a new learning style into the mix that will benefit the students later down the line. For example, by allowing students in Elementary to test online, not only will they be preparing for future exams, but they are also saving schools thousands of sheets of paper. The students are also connected to more learning opportunities, like virtual field trips.

With technological tools, students can engage more actively in their learning process, making it more exciting and interactive. Technology can also help to personalize the learning experience, allowing students to learn at their own pace and in a way that suits their learning style. In addition, technology can help teachers to streamline their lesson planning and grading, saving valuable time and energy. Ultimately, using technology in the classroom can improve student outcomes and help prepare students for success in a digital world.

These prompts came to me when I read the article, The Impact of Digital Tools on Student Writing and How Writing is Taught in Schools. The authors, Kristen Purcell, Judy Buchanan, and Linda Friedrich, go into detail about how digital tools have helped students significantly in their writing skills. The students also had a higher collaboration rate since they could easily make projects together and edit as they worked. The article even states that using digital tools "encourages student creativity and personal expression" (Purcell, Buchanan, & Friedrich, 2013). 

Utilizing digital tools in schools can greatly enhance the learning experience for students and teachers alike. From online resources and interactive lessons to collaborative projects and virtual field trips, these tools offer a wealth of opportunities for educational growth and development. While there may be some challenges to overcome, the benefits of incorporating digital technology into the classroom are clear. With careful planning and thoughtful implementation, schools can create a dynamic and engaging learning environment that prepares students for success in the digital age.
